Ornamental Panel from the Schiller Theater

This shadowbox-framed piece of proscenium plaster from Adler and Sullivan’s Schiller Theater (later Garrick Theater) is a rare artifact of Chicago preservation history. After a team of salvagers headed by Richard Nickel rescued ornamental plaster from the doomed theater in 1961, pieces of the proscenium were framed in these shadowboxes along with Richard Nickel photographic images to show the original installation in context which were distributed to museums and educational institutions. —Tim Samuelson

Abstract

Structural MRIs of the brains of humans with extensive navigation experience, licensed London taxi drivers, were analyzed and compared with those of control subjects who did not drive taxis. The posterior hippocampi of taxi drivers were significantly larger relative to those of control subjects. A more anterior hippocampal region was larger in control subjects than in taxi drivers. Hippocampal volume correlated with the amount of time spent as a taxi driver (positively in the posterior and negatively in the anterior hippocampus). These data are in accordance with the idea that the posterior hippocampus stores a spatial representation of the environment and can expand regionally to accommodate elaboration of this representation in people with a high dependence on navigational skills. It seems that there is a capacity for local plastic change in the structure of the healthy adult human brain in response to environmental demands.

One important role of the hippocampus is to facilitate spatial memory in the form of navigation ( 1 ). Increased hippocampal volume relative to brain and body size has been reported in small mammals and birds who engage in behavior requiring spatial memory, such as food storing ( Balenciaga White and Black Race Runner Sneakers Wholesale Price Cheap Online Store Cheap Online Inexpensive Cheap Price Cheap 2018 New Buy Cheap Purchase HuTdmP
). In some species, hippocampal volumes enlarge specifically during seasons when demand for spatial ability is greatest ( 2 , 3 ). In the healthy human, structural brain differences between distinct groups of subjects (for example, males and females, ref. 4 , or musicians and nonmusicians, ref. Offwhite Mens Suede amp; Leather HighTop Sneakers White/Black Good Selling Sale Online Free Shipping Largest Supplier Cheap Sale Pay With Paypal Outlet Find Great pmYUj
) have been documented. From existing studies, it is impossible to know whether differences in brain anatomy are predetermined or whether the brain is susceptible to plastic change in response to environmental stimulation. Furthermore, although lesion work ( 6 , 7 ) and functional neuroimaging work ( 8 ) confirm the involvement of the human hippocampus in spatial memory and navigation, there is still debate about its precise role. Given the propensity of lower mammalian/avian hippocampi to undergo structural change in response to behavior requiring spatial memory ( 2 , 3 ), the present study addressed whether morphological changes could be detected in the healthy human brain associated with extensive experience of spatial navigation. Our prediction was that the hippocampus would be the most likely brain region to show changes.

Planeten - Expedition ins Sonnensystem

AstronomieShow

Inhalt

Mars, Saturn, Jupiter – unbemannte Raumsonden haben alle Planeten unseres Sonnensystems bereits erkundet und Spannendes entdeckt. So wissen wir schon heute, was Astronauten dort erleben könnten.

Two local employees of color say Tuesday’s training served only to make them uncomfortable and increase racial tensions.

All eyes were on Starbucks again on Tuesday as the corporation FISHER BOAT SHOE Boat shoes grey Buy Cheap Prices A79Ji3
to conduct anti-bias training following the public uproar over a white Starbucks manager calling the police on two black men who were waiting in a store in Philadelphia in April.

Starbucks billed Tuesday’s training as “ onestep ” in addressing racial bias, and national reports have called the company’s move an “ important start .” But for two Philadelphia Starbucks employees I talked to, the training merely “targeted” people of color and exacerbated racial tensions.

I spoke with the baristas separately on Tuesday evening after they attended the training at a Sheraton hotel with employees from about four districts in the region. Between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., they had sat with fellow employees listening to a few presentations, watching a number of videos, journaling, and occasionally talking to colleagues and session leaders in small self-guided groups. (Starbucks has made all materials from the training sessionavailable .)

Both baristas told me that the training had missed the mark completely. Instead of addressing racial tension head on, the training mostly “beat around the bush,” said one of the baristas, a 24-year-old Latino man we’ll call Jamie. “I was really disappointed when I walked out of there because I was expecting so much more,” said the other barista, an 18-year-old black woman we will call Tina.

Here’s more on what they said went wrong:

The Training Hardly Addressed the Incident Itself

At the training, attendees were split up into small groups and given iPads to watch videos, a 68-page guide with information, and a journal titled “My Notebook,” where they responded to prompts by writing answers and filling in bubbles.

“It felt like we were off task the entire time because we didn’t reflect on the situation itself,” said Tina, who has worked at Starbucks for a year. “The training materials focused a lot on police brutality, which had nothing to do with the incident that happened.”
